Been becoming more and more interested in the drifting scene and finally decided to build a car to learn with. I started browsing craigslist for anything rwd that was cheap. I was never really into cressidas, I mean, I knew about them, just never really considered one because they are all junk or rusting away around here. I was expecting to find some beat to crap 240sx or something, then my wife found this Cressida with a bad 7m (go figure). It was very cheap, I went and looked at it and was impressed with the condition, so I drove it home (guess the 7m wasn't that bad). It ran ok, but had a couple of burnt valves and a bhg. Anyways, here it is the day I got it:

 

 

 

And it set on my patio for a couple of months...

 

 

 

After some searching I picked up this ls400 from a nice guy in Chicago. He had already parted out most of the interior, but the drivetrain was intact and still good. Cost a whole $300.

 

 

 

I've continued to strip it and now I have it full of scrap waiting to go to the yard. I kept the engine/harness/ecm/ect.. and the old Ronal's

 

 

 

 

Started stripping the Cressida, I had plenty of help.

 

 

 

I want to get this pig as light as possible, and I had a bunch of time over the weekend so I bought some dry ice. I had been intrigued by the stuff and kept hearing about how you can remove the tar sound deadening with it. So I gave it a shot. It made it a lot easier to chip up the tar! Instead of little chips coming up, I was able to get up to 8" squares of the stuff at a time. It was a mess but well worth it.

Overall I was able to remove around 50lbs of this stuff from the floorpan, under the backseat, and the trunk!! Not bad at all!!

 

 

I also removed the sunroof (40 some lbs if I remember right), and replaced it with this couple pound piece of .080 aluminum. used plenty of sealer.

 

 

It will eventually get painted over when I paint the car...

 

 

Then finally just the other night I was able to get the 7m out. What a pile, it was leaking everywhere..

 

 

 

That's how it currently sits, I am busy, so this will go slow, but I expect to have a 1uzfe powered driftable car by next summer. I'll keep this updated.

I wouldn't think CO2 would stay cold long enough to work unless you used a ton of it. Another budget option for removing sound deading is used oil, leaves a beautiful bare base.

 

OP, do you have any experience in this type of swap or any mechanical background?

FYI,

Ditching the auto for a 5 speed will make the wiring 75% easier. On the downhill side of a 1uz 87 supra and 87 toyota pickup, both with 5 speed, and the wiring is very simple.

 

75% simpler BUT 300% more expensive!

I would imagine that oil would be a huge pita to clean up, let alone to paint over. It would probably take the tar off nicely though. While I don't have experience with this swap specifically, I have done/been a part of multiple swaps in lots of different types of vehicles, American, Honda, Nissan, Saab, etc.. but I am mostly partial to Toyota. I don't forsee any issues with this swap, the wiring seems suprisingly easy. You can say that wrenching is kind of an obsession.

I thought I would do something fancy, and cut the top off another X8 so I would have the exact curvature.

Handed it over the the guy who was putting my cage in, as he said 'no problem' welding the pannel in, but he tottally fucked it up !

I killed two 5spd 7m cars before I killed the third one with the JZ. Number four is on JZ engine two, setup four,and will soon enough be engine 3/setup 5.

The plan is to build the car to learn on and to be reliable. The stock 1u has enough power to drift with and just be able to beat the crap out of it without having to worry about the issues associated with turbocharging. I'll use the engine in mostly stock form while I build up the rest of the car, then if I get tired of it, I'll probably do a 1jz or na-t 2j. At this point I'll have almost nothing into the 1u besides basic maintenance stuff, manual trans apter, and whatever it takes to mount it in the car, so I'm going with it.

Quick question.. What if any sensors, components, etc would be worth keeping from the 7m? I am keeping the harness for reference and extra plugs, but is there anything else worth keeping before the motor goes to the scrapper?

Like maybe you can get $20 for it on eBay, as it fits a lot of other cars (I think).

 

But you can probably make a few bucks selling little odds and ends off it to newbie 7M owners, either on eBay, or the Supra forums.

Haha, that's kind of what I figured.. Just wasn't sure if any sensors or anything interchanged with a 1u.. I looked over it and didn't think so.

 

 

And in other news, the LS400 is ready to go the scrapper.. Just thought people could use a laugh at the worlds stupidest swap. It took me 10 min to throw it in there, and I was laughing the whole time. It's not even bolted in. Someone is going to crap when they open the hood at the j/y expecting to see a 1U lol.

 

 

 

Just for anyone stupid enough to actually try, it fits perfectly. Have at it.
