Gordo 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2014 Well, Hell has frozen over, and now pigs will fly......... I finally have in my hands, the uber-rare .86:1 5th gear set for my trans. (made of pure unobtainium) All the way from Bulgaria ! The only way to fly with a big cammed 7MGE that makes less power at 3000 than a 4AG....... Now when I run it to red line in 4th, it won't drop below where it makes power. Had to do this with the auto, and made a big difference. Wanted to go manual, and the damn problem popped back up. Time to start building my other W58 !

Gordo 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2014 Well, got the engine bay cleaned, removing 3 years of dust & cat hair So am working on the steering quickener. Just need to design a mount for it. #1 son says billet aluminum, I voting for welding a bunch of steel together.........
brian 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2014 what's the ratio change?
Gordo 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2014 2:1 Was 3 turns lock to lock, now 1.5.
Mo 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2014 I think I just found the answer to my annoying steering problem! Thanks Gordon.
tougekid1 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2014 Damn..3/4 turn from center to lock...add knuckles and it might be to much for daily duty's. Looking forward to hearing a review of this set up.
Jspec603 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2014 When you first posted this idea, I was absolutely going to build one. Now that I see the positioning, I'm concerned with it actually fitting with the UZ swap. Looks great in your bay tho! Great work as always!!
Gordo 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2014 Ah, yeah, probably would never fit with a 1UZ, unless you did major surgery, and put it up under the dash.
bwcress 0 Report post Posted February 3, 2014 Wow that's really fast... had an experience with a steering quickiner in an rx7 made the steering super twitchy and I hated it... could have been me not being used to it but that's just my opinion
ChriSOL 0 Report post Posted February 3, 2014 so gordo's suspension and steering setup should result in the nimblest x-chassis ever built? i really want to see this thing in person.
Gordo 0 Report post Posted February 3, 2014 Either nimble, or kill me when something fails while in a high speed sweeper. Oh wait, that will be because the 7M spews coolant all over the rear tires.........
ChriSOL 0 Report post Posted February 3, 2014 here lies gordo, he died doing what he hated.
Gordo 0 Report post Posted February 3, 2014 Yeah, but my spirit would haunt every JZ that drove by the spot, causing a momentary spike in engine temp.
Austin 0 Report post Posted February 3, 2014 But the jz can handle a slight overheat without blowing its load, so we'll just scoff and drive on.

Demesio 0 Report post Posted February 4, 2014 ^I can vouch for that! My electric fan went out once in socal traffic and my needle spiked for about 10 minutes before getting to an exit. All that happened was my dumbass getting burned by the boiling coolant... the engine has been running for two years already without a problem
Gordo 0 Report post Posted February 4, 2014 I hate JZs..........
Gordo 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2014 Making progress on the mount for the steering quickener, in spite of my choice of material. It's a piece of stainless that I dug out of a scrap metal bin at one of my past jobs. Either 309, or alloy-20, as Carmin had both a foundry, and an acid pickling deparment, and Takata had a plating department. Figured it would look nice, and it just happened to be the only thing I had in 1/8" plate. So 3 Starret band saw blades later, I had these cut out. Managed to get the 2 holes drilled, then trial fit. After a little more grinding, it was time to tack it together, and do a final check. I now have to cut 2-3 gussets, and tack them in place, along with the flanges that it will bolt to the chassis with. Then weld the whole thing up once fitment is verified. It will bolt to the chassis via 4-5 8mm nutserts.
Gordo 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2014 Little more done yet today Just need to check the angles of the mount flanges before final welding. Past midnight here, but it's still warm, so it may happen before sunrise.
Gordo 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2014 Done, except for the 8mm nutserts (due in tomorrow).

Austin 0 Report post Posted February 19, 2014 Looking fresh gordo! I like it!
Gordo 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2014 Well, this fucking job is done, now to move onto the compound brake system. After much headackes, the nutserts were installed. My nutsert tool wasn't big enough to handle M8 inserts, as I only had mandrels up to M6. So I picked up some thread reducers, that went from 10/24 to M8. Problem was, there was no way to squeeze the handles on the tool hard enough to expand the inserts. So not wanting to use extensions on it, and possible break it, I made one, then a second tool setup, before I got them in. All the time swearing at the fucking projects I get myself into...... And I thought this was going to be halfway simple. The problem is, I know the compound brake system is going to be a pain in the ass, and that is next
