The Cressida when I first got it, $300, was supposed to be a daily driver.

Anyway got a junk mk3 turbo supra donor, put the r154 in the cressida, put the turbo on the 5m, megasquirted it and ran it like that for a while. I did do some things to the engine, tried out a old seat grinder.

and whatever, the whole time I was considering what my next move would be, yea it needs suspension, multiple other things... wanted more power better gas mileage. Decided to go vvti 1JZ.

 

So I had this corolla that I spent many dollars on, fwd and slow despite building a pretty serious N/A engine it was probably only 200hp if that and I spent less than 1/4 of what I spent on it on the turbo 5m and definitely had more power.

Basically funding my 1jz swap + other shit that will be done, still have to sell more corolla shit. Oh traded the shell without engine or trans for a 84 X6 wagon... piece of shit, no idea what I'll do with it.

 

Oh... I pulled out the 5mgte and sold it with the harness and megasquirt for $600, pretty decent if you ask me.

Was sent a incorrect ecu... extra harness... got shit rectified and a free ignitor.

 

Problem was the harness for the proper ecu had crushed plugs.

I found that plugs from a lexus v6 are exactly the same. Sweet.

So I was gonna use the stock rad and my old water to air intercooler setup but imo the water to air was so redundant how it would have to be piped, I have the cross in front of the engine anyway. Why not do air to air? Infact might as well get a new rad too.

And this is an example of one of my retarded ideas that actually happens...

Well might as well V-mount it works better in theory. Just takes an incredible amount of work.

I have a friend that has the DM crank pulley. It's been on the car for YEARS. No issues at all.

 

He also never drives the car past like, 5,000RPM.

 

I think the DM pulleys are fine for people who just street drive. People whose engines live only above 7000RPM on the other hand, might benefit from a dampened, dampered? pulley.

I've only ever seen them cause crank sensor noise, poor running and blow up the entire timing belt, tentioner and bracket after a few pulls on a dyno.

 

I wouldn't take a chance with it. Crank pulleys are supposed to have rubber in them for a reason.

Okay man. I appreciate your candor. But I have to say in all of those cases it's hard to believe any of it was caused by the crank pulley, likely other causes.

 

I do expect premature wear of my acc belt though.

How is a cooling system different on a vvti compared to a non vvti? I see so many chaser engines online with them, was there a cut off year or is it a different chassis?

I got it from jdm-online.

 

Only thing different is it uses the 2jzgte back half of the water pump and its own unique water pump, should be able to bolt on a 2jzgte water pump was gonna do the water pump but accidentally ordered a n/a water pump which is again different. I think that's it in the cooling system...

 

Not sure what ur asking but if u mean for vvti engines they start around 96 in soarers and chasers(jzx100). 2 different versions also one with ects and one with ects-I(tbw) just research before buying I was picky on which engine and ecu.

IIRC only the vtti's use the hydraulic hydrofan water pump that has been proven to fail. I also remember seeing something about different waterjackets for better cylinder cooling but I would have to take a closer look at the diagrams to be sure.

Due to modification of the water jacket in the cylinder head, cooling performance is improved, improving knock resistance. In addition, the improvement of cooling air flow for the intercooler also helps to allow the compression ratio to be increased from 8.5:1 (previous 1JZ-GTE) to 9.0:1, improving combustion and allowing improved fuel efficiency.

what the fuck is a hydrofan, mine had a clutch fan normal water pump, like i said vvti has the same back housing as 2jzgte, iirc hydrofan is a total different back housing from earlier 1jzs

Ah yes, thats what I ment, the hydrofan. I've seen a bunch with them, and a ton like yours. I'm curious if one was superior to the other. Good info :thumbsup:

Depends on the car really. From what I've heard hydro fans have better cooling power when they're operating correctly. But like everything else in mechanics, more moving parts = more places to fail. Clutch just gives you a more bulletproof setup that obviously provides enough cooling to get shit done.

 

For the most part:

1JZ-GTE in Supra and SOME jzx90/100's = Hydrofan

1JZ-GTE in Everything else = Clutch Fan

2JZ-GTE in Supra = Clutch Fan

2JZ-GTE in Aristo = Hydrofan

 

But back on topic, what are you plans for brakes/suspension?

Not really worried about that right now gotta do a trutrac and one piece driveshaft first, I do have x8 stuff for the front. Not really a fan of any available suspension for the x7 all if it is stupid fucking spring on trailing arm setup.

So since I decided to do water to air again I'm just gonna use my old ic to run it temporarily.

 

I repaired my harness that was fucking cut it half... if it wasn't for that wiring the harness to the car would have been a couple hour job...

Anyway so the harness is all done and stuff. I did my water piping, temporary intake piping and made my exhaust, reinforced the old rad support.

Thanks guys. Only my 2nd exhaust ive made... If I was to do it again I'd put another v band in the middle... other than that I'm happy with the final fitment... I'll take a pic of it on the car when I get a chance, put it on tonight but i worked late and have to work early tom so was in a rush... Also my vvti solenoid connector was broken and the solenoid doesnt have any continuity. So I ordered a new one and fyi for vvti guys there is an updated part available.

 

Gonna try and make it running and driving this weekend if all goes well

Alright car runs since sunday and almost ready to be drivable just gotta put some interior back and mount my pwr steering cooler. Gonna wait till this weekend before a I take it out for a shakedown. See how it likes -30 and a weekend of doing donuts and shit.

Because I slack at updates

 

Few problems, power steering pump is fucked... guess one of its seals got dried out sitting for so long and just sucks in air or something because it just cavitates and whines... so damn annoying.

 

I didn't pressure wash out the engines cooling system when I got it, I knew there was some debris but it clogged up my heater core... so in -25c that sucks ass along with the vacuum control bullshit. I have a MX62 wagon, maybe the manual heater controls from it will fit. Anyway I pressure washed out the engine cooling system, and heater core at work, and did a cooling system flush with our nice machine, gonna have to give it another go to get it nice and clean though.

Not totally sure on the venting yet but ill probably duct it out the spare well area. Intake ill just put the arm rest down and drop the rear windows - bam or from under the rear seats. I cant use the trunk lid because itll just suck in air there kinda like how if you had no trunk seal it would just suck in dirt on a gravel road. I also want to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning and then dying.

 

The fans should move enough air to cool heat transferred from the intake and if they aren't then I'll get better ones. Well hopefully this works but we'll see... I'm also trying to overcome the one problem I ran into with my old water to air... on a hot day with it hot after driving a while and say you go to meet up with some bitches and park it for 30mins, when you get back in and start it the whole water system would be heat soaked because it was all in the engine bay. Took like 10-15 mins of driving around to get back to ambient temp area. Now I don't have to share air flow and heat soak with the rad and engine bay.

 

I'm also going to use a water tank this time.

 

Yall's air to air intercoolers dont get good airflow when you're sideways anyway.

Got some ae86 t3 rear coilovers cheap and made them work with longer shocks because with the shocks that came with them I was basically sitting on the bump stops right away.

Still looks like a piece. Fixed up a ls400 for my mom, and the other cress is my parts car/tire storage bin.

 

And yea I tend to over complicate things, my biggest enemy is myself hah, it makes it so hard. I have to have this car driving every day so at least that makes it so I always have to be finished whatever I'm planning by the time monday comes around. If I ever had a garage to just do a build in, it would go on for a life time.
