What gear oil is best for R154?

Recommended Posts

I had regular dyno lube in both my w58 and r154. When I switched them out for MT90 both shifted better. I know the zf gear boxes shift like asshole with regular gear oil for the first 1kmiles or so, never asked why.

depends on trans and what they call for as well. which is what gordo was saying. r boxes are that transition years, from old to not so old. i dont have a fsm that tells me what toyota asks for in it.

side note, honda is notorious for this and their transmissions will only run on their oils, honda atf, honda diff fluid, honda synchomesh whatever fluid for their manual transmissions. internet was saying normal motor oil works fine too (its a 10w30? by designation, but motor oil is NO good for the trans) this was the leading cause of a friend of mine nuking 3 transmissions on his ef lol. its meant to get you home if you have none...but really if u have none, you either never change it and it was leaking, or you have a hole in the box..in which case you have minimal choices..

food for thoughts
