Powered by Hate, the saga of a street car rebuild.

I picked up Bills Cressida recently.
Watch me fuck it up...

I spent 3 years or so out of the car thing, but was always looking for another project car of my own. Through this "down time" I was constantly doing metal fab work for buddies and some random people online that I had access to cars to be able to build stuff for to stay somewhat involved. I was mostly doing intake/exhaust fabrication..

The day after I picked it up.

Went to a local car meet to hang out and saying Hi to some of my old friends.

I changed out some random shit based on preference, changed out the spent rear tires and washed up the car

Setup a 90% brand new in bag ebrake system for the z32/r32 brake conversion. I was missing a few key pieces, so it took a few days to get inventory and get the rest of the bits. Unused drum smelled like shit when burning off all the crud.

the car needs a few odds fixed up for safety inspection after I had that done yesterday, I'm doing that this weekend. Supra lower control arm bearings in the spindle, and a few wiring bits like windshield sprayer/tail light ground.

next up is a fan shroud and intercooler/rad ducting after the inspection is done. the car gets a bit hot. also need to check the plugs, getting a bit of misfire at 4500-5000+ under full boost.

Damn Bill, nice car.

Don't remember ever seeing that radiator support before.

Matt, you screw it up, JZXP will send a wet team to your house, and your name will be Mutt........

Im fucking with you dude, I think Bill and I have very similar styles.

Im in discussion with Adam at Feast auto group (since he helped me import my last car and it was painless) to try and find some "period correct" seats to replace the torn leather buckets.

I think we have narrowed it down to Recaro LX LS type. It will probably have to wait for a bit now since the stuff that popped up for the safety (bushings and front tires) dug me into the seat budget. Having a 6 month old at home and the wife off work for maternity leave make things a bit tighter.

If I can get a few more fab jobs in the fall I will get the buckets and some new wheels for the spring. Im having a hard time finding something close, but I was thinking CCW classic 2 piece would be a nice fit for the car.

For now, its a new to me car. I want to drive it roughly as is this summer and tidy up things that need to be done. like the ducting, bushings, and other stuff that pops up with a 26 year old car.

Do you mean the adapters?

The calipers look like z32 stuff. front rotors are z32 with a hubcentric adapter to center it, the rear iirc are x100 or x110 rotors. that makes them work with the Cressida parking brake. im sure you could make z32 rotors work too, but im not sure of the offset of the z brakes compared to the x100/110 rotors and I would wager the z brake rotors have a different drum size.

the brackets look like a hunk of steel with 4 holes. (sorry, no pics... but they are super basic looking)

The rotor stuff is on my list of crap to look up. I would like to put together a 2 piece front rotor system that doesn't have the adapters, with wilwood bits (hat, rotor, hardware) and I would like to find a rotor that I can use in the rear that I don't need to order from another continent. I do plan on tracking the car so brakes wear out and ordering from japan isn't that cool when you need something.

ohh, nevermind. i thought you meant the dual caliper setup for the rear. i think i remember seeing gordo's post back when i didn't my front z32 calipers. i actually have one of his old kits purchased through ebay.

i have the flipside brackets for running z32 rear calipers for a dual hydro setup. i haven't test fit yet, but AFAIK, stock ebrake has to be removed to fit the bracket. i got excited for a second thinking i could run a diff rotor to avoid this.

Does flipside still make those brackets?

I think you posted a picture of them once, and they were nice.

the recaro LX LS seats look very at home in the mx83. if there was a factory sport upgrade option these would fit the bill. they sit a bit lower than factory on Bride MOs which is nice for me being 6'2". the blue ones i found even matched up to the factory blue interior rather well.

Thanks guys.

Just did my first of two lower control arm bushings. I will spare you the photos it doesn't look like much.

The 1.5"x0.035" tube was perfect. Had to ice the bushing and then it slid right in. When I rolled the edge of the tune over the Upright it did go out of round a bit. A hit with some dychem and a brake hone was able to show me where I needed to file down a bit.

Have to do the other side still and then it should be good to go. The side I just did was the worst of the two and it was pretty sloppy. Will be interesting to see if it still has the vibration at highway speeds or if it truly is the dss driveshaft. I have a local dude who can balance it, but I think that means I need to get new universal joints.

@Stephen if you need a BP or b6 manifold I have jigs made to be able to build one for you. I'm capped out for modding funds and will need to sell another manifold to get closer to some wheels or a pair of seats.

Just finished the other lower control arm bearing.

It seems that the 1.5"x0.037" was a hair tight. I couldn't press jn the bearing even after being frozen. I had to chuck up the bearings on both sides in the mill and use sandpaper to take them down 0.015" on both sides to be able to be pressed in after being frozen.

The old bearings came out with no real struggle. Thanks for the clean car Bill.

I would have just used a hone, and opened the ID of the tube up, but you got it done, that's what counts.

And this points out the tolerances in tubing, it is all over the place.

gordo. was much easier to chuck up the bearing than it would be to hone it out. the Ti material of the sleeve vs the soft metal of the bearing it was only ~2 minutes to chuck up the bearing and then sand it with some ceramic belt and then smooth it out with a scotchbrite.

the freezing 100% helped get it into place though with the required press fit. I used a iirc 28mm oil filter socket to push it in and when frozen I could get it almost half way in before I needed to apply pressure. but without being frozen I would have had to press the whole way. I was struggling when my dad dropped in and suggested it since they use dry-ice for the same effect at his place of work. (so a large industrial bushing/bearing can slide in. servicing by pulling over the life of a large machine can ruin the larger part).

Now that those are done, I am going to have one of the front tires flipped and the other swapped with the better one I kept off the rear of the car and just drive it.

Radiator ducting/ custom under tray I will be doing in the next few weeks

Yea... you know that if you had just made your sleeve to the correct ID it would have been a modification you would have only needed to make once. When the bearin fails again you'll have to modify it rather than being able to just use something off the shelf.

And the freezing thing I thought would be common knowledge... you're making me think of seeing a 6 year old watching Bill Nye... "Wow, That's cool!"

Did you know that iff you sprinkle salt on top of an ice cube and place a piece of string on top that the string will stick to the ice cube?

if the oem Toyota bearing only lasts 6 or 7 years I will likely have to make a new sleeve anyways.

I love the instrument cluster set up.

Good to see Bill's ride residing in a great home.

I'm not convinced yet about the 'great home' thing just yet....

The deal about grinding down the OD of the spherical bushing makes me think of some kid with a skate board.
