Y0SH 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2014 So I picked up a 90 cressida last November and blew the head gasket in December. Figured it was a good excuse to do a swap. I picked up a 1J non VVTi and R154. I also picked up a 1 piece driveshaft, FMIC, XM mounts, Mishimoto radiator, and new maintenance parts. I also decided to paint the engine bay while the engine was out. Decided to do the wiring myself until I can afford a panic harness. Finally got it to start tonight so now I need to start putting everything back together. Here's how it sits now.
Tyler 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2014 good job dude, looks like a clean swap
Y0SH 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2014 Thanks. I figured it was best to do things the way I would end up wanting them the first time around, like painting the engine bay and one piece driveshaft. And I'm glad I ended up painting the engine bay now because it reflects so much light I'm able to work on the lower half of the engine bay late into the evening. Y0SH 0 Report post Posted December 13, 2014 Cleaned up the engine bay and started mocking up the bumper tonight.
Lofty 0 Report post Posted December 15, 2014 Any worries about having a cut radiator support? Interesting.
tuner4life 0 Report post Posted December 15, 2014 Yeah, I would at least bolt something across the gap in the rad support. There is a lot more flex there than you realize.
ChriSOL 0 Report post Posted December 15, 2014 this thread is evidence that some people at jzxp still do it right. 1. if you dont have progress, dont post about your car. 2. if you're not posting about your car, shit all over everyone else. is the intercooler piping acting as a battery tie-down?
Y0SH 0 Report post Posted December 15, 2014 Yeah, I am planning on building a brace that will go across and secure the radiator, before it moves under it's own power. That IC piping actually holds it in place pretty well, although that wasn't the plan. I'm still planning on tying it down, and later relocating it to the trunk. I also didn't want to start a thread until I had gotten the swap to at least turn over, because if I would have started this from the beginning, no one, including myself, would have cared to follow it with how slow and basic this build has been so far. Rue 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2014 I like it when faggots cut that section out of their radiator support. Always makes me feel better about doing it right and keeping mine intact. Spent all of that time make a somewhat clean engine bay then fuck it up by cutting shit that doesn't need to be cut. "It makes it easier to get the motor in and out..." GAY!!! Gordo 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2014 Are the JZs like 3" longer than a 7M ? Never had any real problem stabing any of mine, with the long ass autos hung on them. Now I'm lazy, and started dropping the trans first, then lifting out the engine.
Y0SH 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2014 It's one of my biggest regrets with the swap. But I figured it would be an excuse to try and do a v mount setup in the future. I also would like to do a tube front end and tubs the next time I pull my engine out. My plan is to get the engine running reliably. Next, I want to do coils, suspension, wheels, and breaks. After I get all of that sorted out I'll start collecting parts to go single turbo, cams, injectors, and I'd like to get an AEM V2. Then beat on it till the bottom end goes and go 1.5. Lofty 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2014 I think this is a very cleanly done swap and looks better than any of my progress in 5 years. I was really just curious as I thought that little bullshit bar stopped some flex, and then I was wondering if you were trying to v-mount I thought about v mount but decided it was unnecessary for what I was going to be doing but that's mostly cause I didn't want to do it. I think I saw kyle cut his out as well and I remember i was trying to decide how i was gonna fit an aluminum rad in my car as well. This rad seems to fit good, you have a part number or dimensions? Nice work dude. (half of my bay is shaved, the other half isnt. we all make bay mistakes)
Gordo 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2014 You could always find a doner car, and cut one out that was, say 4" longer to overlap. Then add nutserts to it, and have one that would bolt in.
Yotarip 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2014 ^^ That's what I had to do to my truck since the original owner hacked it up. It's nice to have a working hood latch/ release. I used the existing treaded holes in what was left of the rad support to achor the sectioned one on.
Bill 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2014 Some turds mangled my rad support pulling the motor years before I ever got the car. I would have replaced it if I had a straight one at the time. Nice job.
Kyle 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2014 Fuck no I never cut mine out. I trimmed the one for the melon to fit the high mounted IC and the PO of my current jack stand resident cut that one. It really depresses me every time I think about it. So what's this cars purpose in life?
Y0SH 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2014 That's a great idea Gordo, and it would probably look ten times better than anything I could make. Although I think it'd be fun to try and fab up something just to see what I could come up with. Lofty, I just think the v mount would be fun to try to fab up. It would also be nice to have better air flow to the radiator and shorter Intercooler piping. I have been wanting to fab up some aluminum ic piping for a while. Any excuse I get to practice with a tig I'll use. I can get you the dimensions and part #, but it's just a cressida mishimoto rad I ordered from enjukuracing. I also went ahead and ordered locking hood pins so I didn't have to worry about the hood latch or assholes fuckin with my shit. I have already had some assholes take my friends headers and exhaust out of my garage. Luckily my car was out at my dad's shop. That UZ swap in that pickup looks like fun! Nice swap! ChriSOL 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2014 ^ fab something? just go tube front. cant be that much harder...
Y0SH 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2014 I'm really itching to drive it and see what the 1J feels like after not driving this car in a year. But for now I want to get it where It's reliable enough where I can just get in it and drive anywhere. Ounce I get the suspension somewhat sorted out I'll start drifting it. Eventually it will be caged, tube front and rear, ounce it goes into a wall. I already stripped another shell of it's doors, hood trunk, fenders, and lights. Figured I better prepare for the worst, and I picked up the shell for free so why not. I'll probably keep as much of the interior in the car as I can, at least until I have to ditch the back seat for a cage, or until I can find another cressida I can build to cruse. But that'll be a while because the next one I pick up my gf wants to daily.
huckersideways 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2014 You seems to be hammering the reliable thing. When your working on a 20 year old car something will always be haywire or being worked on. It's the way it goes. You probably should have thrown the twins in the scrap bin from the get go. They could last a year. They could last an hour. But they will make your brain ache. Otherwise, carry on.
ChriSOL 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2014 ive had mine running mostly daily since early 2011? not bragging, they suck and that points to how lazy i am with my car-related workings.
Y0SH 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2014 I know it's a 25 year old car with a swapped engine. I'm just saying I would like to work all the bugs out. I wanted to get the engine running before I started changing things. That way when I go messing with things and something isn't working, I'll know where my problem is. Y0SH 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2014 Thanks spook. Chris, that's pretty much what I'm going for now. Something that I can daily, and have fun with. After having t down for a year, actually to the day, I'm just wanting to get it no the road. Huckersideways, I'll worry about making more power after I work out all the bugs, suspension and wheels, and have a chance to enjoy it before I start searing it down again. The longer it hasn't been running, the less motivated I've been. Just getting the engine to run has gotten me excited about it again. I'm finally to a point where when I think about my car, I don't get a headache and annoyed. I would also like to get it on the road to see the clutch and transmission feel.
