New Look / Same Poor Taste

Recommended Posts

Some of this is just copy-pasted from my intro. About the car: it's the worst X8 ever. Low VIN, high miles. No ABS, no leather, and no a-lot-of-other-things now as well.

Abridged list of bullshit I wasted on this car:

-Early Z30 1JZ-GTE

-Went with a Driftmotion 6262 kit. It's whatever.

-440's/SAFC

-AEM UEGO

-MA70 R154

-XM trans mount

-XM single piece driveshaft

-XM diff bushings

-MA70 3.7 LSD. Ugh.

-Mishimoto MA70 radiator

-BC coils

-Z32 front brakes

So first thing's first. This car has a little rust:

I'm using V20 Camry replacement dog legs and Ford Crown Victoria outer rocker panels, which aren't nearly tall or wide enough:

IMG_0773_zpsa76ad4f5.jpg

So I got pissed off and bought IS300 side skirts to cover up this atrocity that should never have been touched except by a forklift on its way to the top of a stack of crushed Chevrolet Caprices.

IMG_0768_zps0b4efb07.jpg

The right side is pretty much finished. Still have to seam seal everything.

IMG_0776_zpse1c25a34.jpg

This is my first time welding anything or making sheet metal templates. I'm not going to show much of the stuff I welded because it's gross. The left side might get done this weekend, but probably not. At this point my car is basically just hopes and dreams scattered across concrete.

And that's about it for this year. After this bullshit is done, car is getting stowed before more snow/salt. Clutch is slipping, but that will have to wait until post-tax return.

When I saw rust on the fenders of my car, I just figured it was a good excuse to cut it all off and build the fenders I wanted.

Are you trying to follow in swim's footsteps ?

It's nice work and everything, but jeeze, I would have scrapped that bitch within a day of buying it.

Just enough time to pull a few parts.

Sorry for the 'swim' comment, your car actually almost runs, and has a few painted surfaces on it.........

Tragically awesome. You're in deep now. Do the same thing to the hood dent that you did to the 1/4 panel dent. And stop painting it. I think this car needs to look like a quilted bag of dicks.

You don't like my sweet color matching? I've got gunmetal rattlecan on the fenders and some GM factory color dusted on the quarter panel. The car isn't even gray. I actually thought it was when I bought it, but I guess it used to be blue?

IMG_0516_zpsb49e2b31.jpg

The hood is beyond help, like every other front end panel. There's even square-edged holes punched through it from when some asshole tried bending it back with vise grips.

Gordo I don't know why I bothered with all this. I shouldn't have. This is probably the last X8 in New England. And I'm definitely the last owner. Figured I should give it a beautiful death.

just popped in from being absent a little while and saw this.

cool stuff man.

i don't do white stuff and sure as hell don't touch the brown stuff. and you have both lol

yet your car looks 5x better than some builds i've seen that started with a mint x8 (i'm guilty of this)

good luck man

Other side was finished before Christmas, then promptly covered up. IS skirts fit pretty well. Car is officially rust-free, for now.

Picked up another shell the other day:

It's about as rusted as my other car was. But it's got the goods I need; headlights, grille, bumper frame, fender, doors, gray cloth interior, etc. I have no luck with hoods, this one looks like it flew open while driving. I also bought a GX bumper:

Maybe I'll even paint the car this year (nope).

Hey. Where did you get the replacement panels from?

I might be copying you since we both live in the rust belt.

Looks good.

It says it's for a Cressida but it's not really. The front section is very close and the rear corner on the right panel almost lines up with the rear pinch weld on the passenger side. Other side doesn't have a pinch weld there because of the spare tire well, so I just made my own

Thanks peoples. Yeah the two tone grew on me. I'll probably end up just painting the top half of the car. That way if I ever fuck something up or change skirts or whatever I can just keep spray bombing it because I'm lazy and cheap.

I want to get the whole kit eventually Gordo. I just had an interview for a CNC position, so if I can get that I should have enough to finish my car the way I want.

I have a contact that can ship it for you, and it will cost a lot less than the $1200 shipping mine cost years ago.

He's a little slow, but the shit shows up, packed pretty well.

Rue just got something from him.

I hope you are a better at running machines than the fucking idiots we have, who are constantly doing things wrong, and fucking things up.

Crap, we should start a thread on who all here makes shavings for a living.

You're only in Texas and I'm in Kansas. It would be worth it to me to take a day and drive down. If I were to spend the money on a bn kit, it would be worth it to get it myself, and the price for gas would be less then shipping.

I also ran a router style CNC at my last job, and the CNC I'll be working on if I get the job will be a lathe making pistons. Although I'd like to get a job running a water jet or something similar so I can learn the program, because it'd be nice to know how to machine parts if I need too.

Allow me to interrupt some of the more high quality shit happening in this section of the forum. Volvo 240 seat belts:

DSC03044_zps3r8lh5sj.jpg

The belt buckles are long as shit, so I was able to use the threads in the trans tunnel for that stupid track that slides into the seats by the factory buckles:

DSC03042_zpsouimpyhg.jpg

Had to remove the inner seat frame trims along with the stock buckles, naturally. The new buckles sort of limit seat fore and aft movement, but the condition of the rest of the car limits how much I care. Haven't cut up and mounted the upper B-pillar trim yet. Might not be possible, as I wanted the belt loop and fastener head to be as close to the pillar as possible.

Sad exterior visual update and more images of skirts/flares/unfortunate wheels. I still think it's uncanny how perfect the length of the skirts is.

IMG_0874_zpsx1wfhjgw.jpg

Wow I fucked up with these wheels. Anyway, car runs badass with new coil packs and plugs. And I still want to paint this thing this year. Still need to get another hood and a passenger fender that doesn't have a hole in it, along with some other bullshit. Whatever I'll post a WTB thing when I have money to talk with.
