JZX81 Engine to Body Harness & Gauge Cluster Connector Pinout
Big Fuckin Shooter posted a topic in X3,X6,X7,X8
Trying to go through my harness to make sure everything is pinned properly so I can get this fucking demon running again. Does anyone have a pinout for a JZX81 (90-91) tach/speedo connector (analog cluster, digital speed sensor)? White female connector, located behind the glovebox, 16 pin. Male connector comes off the engine harness. I was able to find the MX83 pinout but not JZX81, and don't want to proceed on the assumption that they're the same (because that would be fucking naive). Here's the connector I'm talking about. Also looking for a pinout for the JZX81 engine to body plugs, I can't seem to find anything anywhere. I can find pinouts for the MX83 B2 and B3 connectors, but again, don't want to assume they are pinned the same for the JZX81 as they are on the MX83 (especially since the MX83 B3 connector itself is slightly different than the equivalent connector on the JZX81). These guys: http://s512.photobucket.com/user/chaserbuddy/media/RIMG0464.jpg.html Thanks dudes. -
Since I haven't been doing a whole fuckin lot of driving lately because shit is always broken, and cuz I guess I never really introduced myself, I figured I might as well post a thread of my car and what I've been up to. I'm Cam. I live in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Canada's ass hole. I bought this boat from Yoshiken back in April of this year. Looked like this, straight skyriding: I added some flava: Took it out to a local drift practice: Took it out for some local drift practice: Then decided it was time for some new footwork (Big shouts out to G for the hookups): Installed some S9/Stance GR+ Pro Race coilovers, which motherfucking rock my world. Such a huge improvement to the car, its insane. The Teins were ok, but I needed something alot stiffer, and these things FUCKING DELIVER. The car feels like a go-kart now compared to feeling like a boat with the Teins. Way more responsive, and stays way flatter and more precise through transitions. Also installed some S9 subframe bushings recently too. Haven't had a chance to slide on them, but just cornering, you can feel the improvement is immense. Needed to install a cage to compete in DMCC pro, so that's currently in progress, just need to add door bars and paint it: Took the car out for some fun one night, tried a little more boost than normal, and killed my front turbo: Installed a new pair for the time being. What a bitch job just for piece of shit CT12's. Fuck. Did a bunch of other small shit that you probably don't care about. Installed a big front mount and all new piping: Took it out for its first drive on the new turbos, and it felt great for a few minutes, then all of a sudden no boost (like 0.2 bar max) and sounds like the turbos are spinning way too fucking fast, the same sound it makes when a charge pipe comes undone. I checked all my connections, and everything is still connected, so I don't know what the fuck that's all about. I've got some other shit to install still, will probably happen pretty soon: I also installed my S9 Aero, which fits phenomenally well with no modifications whatsoever. It also looks sick as aids. The car is kinda dirty here and the pics are sorta dark, but you get the idea: But before all that other shit happens, I gotta change all my suspension back to stock and install an MX83 front end from my brother's car among other pieces, since some faggot mechanic who has something personal against me reported my car to local vehicle inspection authorities after he fucked me on a safety inspection and I took it somewhere else that passed it. Motherfuck. So that's it for now I guess. SerialNine is the bomb fucking diggity, word to G.

The car is in good hands, and is getting some much needed improvements under the hood. In other news, I am idiot. 110k original kilometres. Zero rust. I will probably just flip it for a meaty profit. Maybe I will do dumb teenager things. Who knows. -

Last week, like every other week for the past 8 months, has been spent finishing the last year of my law degree. Plus it's Canada, so last week it was also still snowing. -

Oh ya, from last fall btw: https://www.instagram.com/p/BCDoq6bL4EC/?taken-by=jett_the_drift_dog Got the car working right, and handed it down to my bro who will actually have time to enjoy driving it. -
Alright, so ever since getting my car running again this summer it's been having random misfiring issues and hitting a major stutter under boost at about 4-4500 RPM. I've pretty much reached the end of my rope with trying to diagnose what the fuck the issue is, so I figured I'd ask here to see if you guys had any other ideas of what it could be before I burn it to the ground. Here's the background on the car: 1991 JZX81 Mark II 1.5JZ (GTE block) JZZ30 M/T ECU 440cc Aristo Injectors w/ stock FPR & JZA80 TT fuel pump Things I have already tried to solve the issue: New BKR7E plugs gapped to 0.28 New Aftermarket Coilpacks, heatshrinked (also tried running it on an OE set which are known to be good) Can't isolate the miss by pulling coilpack plugs, it seems completely random Checked Coilpack plugs/wiring - good Checked Injector plugs/wiring - good Compression tested cylinders 1-6: 153, 153, 166, 167, 164, 153 Pressurized the intake system to 100 psi, no boost or vacuum leaks Swapped ECU and Igniter for known good ones Checked cam and crank sensors, cam sensors were in spec (F - 1301 ohms, R - 1260), crank was out of spec (1453), so I replaced it with a spare (2230). Grounded NSW and STA pins on the ECU Mechanical timing marks are lined up correctly Not throwing any codes besides Oxygen sensor (Code 21) - EDIT: Since changing crank sensor to one within spec it is now throwing code 13. Have not tried another MAP sensor yet. Symptoms: Car idles relatively smooth when it's cold, but as soon as it gets warm it misses pretty badly. When revved up to around 4k ish in neutral the engine hits a misfire/hiccup. Under load it hits a bad stutter at 4-4500 and ~7 PSI, feels kind of like boost cut but harder. Holds 10 PSI after getting past the stutter up to redline but feels like it's still stuttering, and like something is holding it back. Runs fine when just cruising, no hint of a miss under 4k RPM (although it is running kind of lean). Ignition timing shows 35-45* advanced when engine is cold, 50-60* advanced when warm which is way too fucking high. AFR is between 15-16 at idle, 14-15 cruising, 10 or richer under boost. Plugs are clean white/grey in colour, little to no soot, so its lean as fuck. I don't know what else to check to diagnose the issue. My next plan of attack is to just find an unmolested JZZ30 Soarer harness and swap it in since my harness is 25 years old and has been converted to run 3 different setups and cut/spliced/soldered so many times that something could be fucked, although I've checked it pretty thoroughly and can't seem to find anything obvious. Ideas?
-
Problem solved. Car is a beast now. I didn't realize that checking timing by the loop of wire inside the igniter connector shell would give me incorrect readings. Checked timing with a spark plug wire between the first coil and plug and it was at about 15*. LET'S GO
-
After checking for continuity between the grounds for the cam and crank sensors the crank sensor was wired backwards. Misfire seems to be gone. Haven't driven it yet to see if IDL1, NSW or STA fixed the 4k RPM stutter. However, timing is still way advanced. I'm seeing 30-35* at idle, 25* in diag mode. Any ideas what else to check next? Cam and crank sensors all tested within the acceptable range of resistance.
-
Holy fuckin shit. IDL1 wasn't populated either, the person who previously assembled my harness while I was too busy with school pinned it into one of the body connectors. Pinned it into the ECU, didn't seem to change much in terms of running at idle. Still has a miss, timing is still at 50* cold. However, I now have a code 13, which is fucked because I just swapped an out of spec crank sensor for an in spec one. The saga continues. EDIT: Also forgot to mention, sometimes the car fires up on the first or second turn of the starter, and other times it feels like it's trying to fire on the compression stroke and takes a few more cranks of the starter to actually start. Seems more and more like an ignition timing related issue.

No those pins aren't populated. Should they be?

Has anyone ever fitted headlights from another USDM vehicle to an X8?
Big Fuckin Shooter posted a topic in X3,X6,X7,X8
Because the inspection authorities and cops around here are cunts, I'm anticipating they will fail my headlights at certification inspection for not being DOT approved (JZX81 Mark II) or I will get pulled over and get a VI because of same. Which leads me to my question: Have any of you ever fitted headlights from something else to your X8, or do you know of anyone who has? Trying to think of alternatives in case I run into this issue. AE92 Corolla looks like it could work, but do you bros have any other ideas? -

It's legal to drive it, but the traffic cops here make it their mission to fuck with car enthusiasts, especially those with right hand drive cars, by pulling us over and requiring us to have full light vehicle inspections if they can find ANYTHING on your car that doesn't meet standards. For example they can subjectively say that because it appears you have ANY negative camber, just by eyeballing, that your alignment must be fucked and therefore your car is unfit to be on the road and must undergo a full inspection before it can be allowed back on the road again. I have seen them do this to a brand new bone stock M3, it's ridiculous. So if I get the wrong cop on the wrong day, he would look over my car with a fine toothed comb and pull it off the road because my headlights aren't DOT stamped. Anyways I got it back on the road without having to change to DOT/USDM headlights so that's cool. Apparently licensed mechanics don't view it as being as much of a safety issue as the cunt traffic cops do. -
I had a code 13 when one of my cam sensors was on its way out. Check the resistance of your cam and crank sensors against factory values and swap out the bad one for a good one and your problem should disappear. Don't know what the range is for sensor resistance anymore but I'm sure someone on here does.

Just a heads up to any Canadians about the Supra bushings: Toyota tried to charge me over $100 CDN (About $7 US right now...) for a new bushing. They're not cheap. Although it may just be that my local dealer is a fuck. But yeah, make sure you get a quote before you order.
-
Man that almost looks like my car before I went and fucked with it. I like. Also considering doing spring Matsuri 2016 as a grad gift to myself. I might hit you up for some tips.
-
Cool. Thanks Gordo. So the eyelet further to the front of the car is a direct fit for the supra bushing while the eyelet furthest to the rear is wider in diameter and requires a pressed in sleeve for the bushing to fit correctly, is that right?
-
So you're saying that the bushing for the front hole of the Supra rear knuckle is a direct fit in the rear hole of the X8 knuckle?
-
Anyone ever figure out what else will work?

That's fine for a short term solution, but when I get pulled over by the Traffic Gestapo they'll look for that shit and send me back for another $300 inspection + all the time to switch all the little shit back to make it passable. No thx. You don't know my hell. I think I'm going to try early 90's legacy, camry and corolla. Time to raid the junkyard. -

lol I wish I could but it's not easy to start out fresh in a new city as a junior lawyer when you have little to no potential clients. Not worth it for me to move somewhere where the cops aren't cunts just to drive a cool car without getting harassed. Would rather stay here and make good money and bring a class action against the traffic division for harassment on behalf of a big group of car enthusiasts instead hahaha -

There's more to it than just the reliability issue. It's also a pain in the dick to own something that really sticks out in our city because the traffic division of our city police are total cunts to anyone with a modified car, and at their total discretion your car will get pulled off the road and require a full mechanical inspection. It's a lot like what Australia sounds like. My car was pulled off the road in 2013 for the wheels/tires being too flush, being too low, not having a shift pattern displayed, and not having daytime running lights. They will use any excuse to pull your car off the road. So now I've had to re fit all my stock parts, raise it up a bunch, re-align it so that it comes within factory spec etc etc. As soon as I get it passed and put it back to the state I would want it to be in, the same shit will happen again, and again etc. Plus, living somewhere that the climate varies so much means our roads are shit, which makes them brutal to drive for cars like mine. I'm also about a 6 hour drive away from any decent tracks (drifting a shitty oval gets old really quick). Daily driver right now is an E36 with 60,000 original km on it. I'm definitely contemplating throwing some coilovers in it and making that the street/drift car once my JZX is gone, or might replace it with a stock JZX100. IDKWTF. -

Nah dudes I figured it out but appreciate the concern. Just had to add missing pins and repin a bunch of the harness. It runs now, just needs a street tune with SAFC. The reason I put the car up for sale was because I haven't gotten to use it for what it was originally built for since 2011, and I am starting to really resent that. Between being too busy or broke from school, bad luck with the car, and life in general I just never had time to get it all sorted to be able to drift it again. With highly modified cars comes a lot of fucking around. I start my career at a big law firm next year and will have next to no spare time to fuck with stupid shit over the next 5 years at least. Therefore, I want to sell this car and replace it with something I can keep mostly stock, throw in some coilovers, and go to the track on a weekend without having to worry about shit blowing up, or other things needing constant fucking around with. I love the car, but I love driving more than I love this particular car, and I am willing to take a big hit on the time, money and sacrifice that I put into this car over the last 6 years to be able to drive again without the hassles of owning a 'race' car. Life changes. Maybe one day when I have lots of money to pay someone to work on my cars for me I will build something cool again, but right now that's just not realistic for me. Who knows, maybe if I get it sorted this summer and have a chance to drive it again I will change my mind, but at this point I'm pretty set on moving on with this part of my life.
