  1. I'm on the market for new suspension. Everyone will probably tell me to just buy Stances or BC coilovers, and I'm almost on board for that option, but are they any good for road course? I barely drive my car other than evenings, weekends, and a few track days a year (what I actually care about), so I want something that will work well for road-course instead of drifting which I never do. Drifting seems to be the focus of Stance, BC, Megan etc. coilovers. Gordon is probably the only person with serious experience with chassis setup (even if it's mostly drag racing) but I'm interested in any first-hand experience anyone has with road course suspension, especially on an X7 (fuck my life). I have acess to the necessary equipment and have the ability to machine parts to make things fit, weld, or generally custom build almost whatever I need. Right now the thing I don't have is a ton of free time. And I don't want to fuck around building an unproven setup that might be trash. Running a business and raising two kids doesn't leave me much car time, so I'm looking for the best suspension with the least custom work possible. PS. fuck my life.

    My daughter is 3 and my son is 10 months old. They're not quite big enough yet. I was probably 8 or 9 when I started actively helping my dad do things like bleeding brakes. I definitely remember spending time in the garage before that, but not usually when there was a car or truck up on stands.

    I have the single wire piezoelectric knock sensors installed right now but could never get my ECU to work with them. I have two Bosch wideband knock sensors in my a toolbox that I meant to install earlier this season but unfortunately my wife doesn't agree that working on my car is equally important to parenting my children.

    I ended up putting in a pair of Koni Race 8610 single adjustable universal inserts in the front, and went to a 10kg/8kg front/rear spring combo. The car is much better than it's ever been on track, and still very driveable on the street, even on pretty awful roads. Both instructors I had were impressed by how well the car handled on track. Unfortunately half way through my second lapping session of the day, after turning up the boost from gate pressure at 10psi to 20psi something went bad and I melted a hole through my #6 piston. The car was dyno tuned to 20psi, and I thrash it on the street at high boost regularly, but I guess dyno load, street load, and track load aren't quite equal... My day was over and now I'm weighing whether I should just throw in another 2JZ-GE bottom end, or grab a VVTi Aristo 2JZ. I'm leaning towards an aristo motor despite the fact that I can get another NA bottom end for $300.00... Either way, this time I'll take the time to set up the knock sensors I have in my toolbox...

    I need info on these arms too. I'm not on FB (still have a page, just don't login). If they're making the arms from scratch dialing out excess camber in the hub backing plate mounting could be possible, but it would involve an adjustable jig, and wouldn't be adjustable on the car.

    I've seen the stance setup. I'm just not convinced that's the route I want to go since 100% of the spring and shock load is on the stock shock tower, which wasn't designed for that amount of load. I've got S13 front camber plates, and modified S13 rear coils in my car now, but the S13 rears using S9 upper spring seats don't work very well unless you run really short springs and the car is absolutely canned. Like, you almost tuck tire at full droop... Not a great setup. I'll check out your thread. I haven't spent enough time on JZXP lately. There's still some great stuff happening here,

    I'm leaning pretty hard towards cutting out my rear shock towers and welding in fabricated S13 rear upper strut towers about 1.5-2 inches lower than the stock X7 shock tower. It would let me run straight up S13 rear suspension with no fuckery other than the lower mount bushing diameter, and would fix almost all of the issues I currently have with my trash hack-job rear suspension.     It's the platform I've got, it makes good power, it just handles like trash, not like old muscle car trash, just not well... I just got an email back from Koni's race department. Their opinion on the best thing I could do with mostly off the shelf parts is double adjustable koni race inserts up front, and double adjustable koni sport shocks from an SN95 (94-04) Mustang in the rear. With some tuning I'm sure the setup would handle great, but the dampers alone would cost $1,400.00 USD, and it wouldn't be anywhere near a straight bolt-up affair on either the front or rear. The rest of my front suspension (ground control sleeves, springs and camber plates) would work, but I'd need rear springs, and it would take some work to get things installed and dialed in. Again, fuck my life.

    Fully aware... If I'm stupid enough to stick with this platform long term I have plans to do something stupid like a C4 corvette rear subframe/suspension/diff swap with custom everything, but that would take about 6 years with the amount of time I have these days to work on cars. On the other hand, e30 BMWs used partial swing-arm rear suspension like the x7 and tons of people love them and swear by their handling (for an 80s car).

    I know this is a fuckin' long-shot, but if I'm going to find it, it'll probably be through one of the guys on here... I got a bunch of replacement side molding pieces because a few of mine were bubbling. I took off one more piece than I had replacements for and now my car looks janky. I need the driver's side rear molding, and am basically willing to buy a full set, or as many pieces of a full set as someone has if they're in really good shape. Let me know what you've got.

    I still have the same X7. Finally got it on a dyno and did a lapping day last summer. This year I have a second kid, but am planning on a few tweaks including 325mm brakes and Brembo calipers from a 2017 CTS, bigger master cylinder, some cosmetic touch-ups, and maybe if I can swing it, new wheels and tires.

    open-element IAT sensor for 1JZ/2JZ

    I'm looking for an open-element IAT sensor that will fit in place of the stock JZ IAT sensor. I don't know why the dummies at Toyota used a closed element IAT, but my intake mani heat soaks if I sit and idle and the IAT heat soaks too showing upwards of 70C as my intake air temp when I'm sure it's nowhere near there. Then takes a while of driving for the IATs to come down to a reasonable value. It kinda helps on a boosted car to have fast response on something like IAT since at higher boost levels high intake temps can become a problem pretty quickly.

    I bought my MX73 cressida in August, drove it until winter and have been keeping it safe and warm in the garage while I amass piles of parts and save for the upcoming madness. This past Friday my buddy Tom and I pulled the 5M out (anyone want a 5MGE?) Kind of a shame to pull a nice clean running motor, but it's making way for much better things. On saturday I drove down to Montreal and picked up a soarer 1JZ When I picked it up I looked at a lot of busted ass motors before I found this one. Not the cleanest ever, but the price was good, compression tested 170 across the board and had a 3" downpipe so I figured I might find a couple more goodies. When I split the engine and trans today I found something weird. The clutch slave setup didn't look normal. and then I got a closer look and got excited. ORC twin plate clutch and lightweight flywheel good for 600 horsepower. 220,500 Yen (~$2800) MSRP $*%@ing score. I'll probably check for cams tomorrow.

    So far so good. I have no traction in first, second, and if I shift too hard into 3rd it'll break loose a bit. I usually tend to shift like the trans is made of glass (which parts of it basically are). Boost by gear is working well. When I want, I can have traction in all but 1st gear. I've got most of my ECU settings really well dialed so driveability is great. Startup is flawless, idle is smooth, it's never run better. I've got a track day booked August 26th and am trying to get out to the local drag strip to see if I can get into the 12s finally.

    Dyno'd last weekend. Fucking heartbreak. 394whp and 425 ft/lb at 20psi on a Mustang MD800 I was hoping to at least break 400whp. After I sort out some suspension stuff the next step is to upgrade turbine wheel and turbine housing to flow more.

    IndyCar turbo. The compressor map is just everywhere lol, looks awesome. I didn't think you could get the EFRs without the integral BOV in the compressor cover.

    Gordon, my understanding was the Bosch 2 wire ring style sensors were "wideband" so they would pick up a broader frequency range than the stock Denso resonant sensors that are tuned to pick up only the knock frequency created by an engine with a specific bore diameter. The sensor suggested by DIYAutoTune (where I get all my megasquirt parts) suggests 0-261-231-008 . Do you know the difference between the 006 and 008? I'm definitely down to give them a try, and thanks for that stud PN. It'll save me time because I won't have to machine it myself. As usual, the old timer is the most useful one in the room when it comes to the hard questions...

    Thanks Bill. I spent 14 hours wrenching yesterday to get ready for dyno day this coming Friday. No pictures, I was too frantic trying to get shit done. -Changed engine mounts to Xcessive poly mounts. I kind of regret not getting the 65 shore Poly. It feels great overall, but at idle the 80 shore transmit a bit too much vibration to the chassis for my liking. -Changed old floppy rack bushings to Xcessive delrin bushings. Also removed the steering damper. Steering feels like a whole other car. Steering feel reminds me of my AE86 a bit. -Wired up my knock sensors, sadly my settings are just way too broad, or I've got a bit too much unshielded wire length near the ECU because it's picking up knock ALL THE TIME if the engine is running. -Oil change, checked diff lube, etc. Still need to do a compression test and leakdown to be sure everything is happy and healthy before I go thrash it hard on the dyno.

    I had to adjust my settings to get everything working properly. I set the VSS pickup to 2500 pulses/km instead of toothed wheel and adjusted tire diameter to actual in the TunerstudioMS Now the vss/rpm calculation works properly for gear selection. Now I just need to dial in my closed-loop boost control PID values and boost-by-gear will be mine.
  22. I'm trying to get boost-by-gear working and I need to get a clean VSS (Vehicle speed signal) input to make it work. I do have a spare digidash gauge cluster I can smash open to reveal the answer I need, but I figured I'd ask around before wasting valuable 1980s shelf-parts. HOW MANY TEETH ARE ON THE VR/HALL EFFECT WHEEL THAT THE DIGIDASH USES TO TURN THE SPEEDO CABLE SPINNING INTO MPH/KPH Thanks homies.

    2 pulses. VSS signal works and is accurate to a couple percent, now to figure out why the R154 gear ratios and my final drive ratio aren't triggering correct gear selection for boost-by-gear.

    I'm using the (I think pink) VSS signal wire that used to run from the digidash to the power steering control box, I just need to configure my ECU to make sense of the signal.

    Holy Fuck. 5 years since an update. I'm a piece of shit. I guess I have the excuse of being a dad, renovating my house, starting a business, and soon to be repeating the renovations and dad again thing. This year I've changed my turbo. It's still a Holset, but I've upgraded the compressor side to a 62.5mm inducer HX40-Super billet compressor wheel and housing from Turbo Lab of America. It still spools to 18psi just before 3k rpm, but should flow enough to make upwards of 600whp and make good power to redline. I finally got my digidash tach working, first time it's worked since I pulled the 5M in 2009. It was fully a waste of time since it's blocked by a gauge pod, but it was on the to-do list... Put in a giant aluminum Mk3 supra rad from ebay. My 32 year old stocker never gave me any problems with overheating but the top tank split last year. Hooked up the knock sensors to my megasquirt pending a dyno day booked July 14th. Bought Xcessive Engineering poly engine mounts, should be installing them this weekend. Last year I took my car to the drag strip to do some shakedown runs and the 32 year old stock floppy-dick rubber mounts drove me nuts. I managed to run 13.3 @ 109mph with 2.02 60ft. No traction, but once I manage to hook it goes. I'll try to get some pictures posted, and a video once I get it on the dyno, but maybe it'll be another 5 years...
