i just finished the swap.. (w58) in my x7.the battery and alt are new. and the battery is at 12.3v.. the starter relay kicks over. and the solenoid on the starter hits too. but still nothing. i would assume the starter is bad but it worked before the swap. and yes i jumpered the neutral safety wires.
i got my wife to turn the key while i check voltage on the battery. it drops down to 11.8v-11.9v when she's turning the key.

Don't smack the starter with anything, these are not cheesy chevy series wound motors,
they have rare earth permanate magnets, that break like glass.........
Most likely the contacts on the solenoid are fried.
Even though the solenoid travels the full distance, there is not enough material on the contacts, and the plunger is bottoming out before the contacts do.
Take it apart, you will see.
They used to sell replacement contacts for these starters, but I have no clue where to look for them, maybe NAPA.
I have one set of contacts set asside for myself, but otherwise, you will need to either find an old starter with good contacts, or just a whole new starter.
If you find the contacts, also pick up a new set of brushs, and replace those while your into the starter.

Can you post a pic of how you're testing. I have a feeling it must be something that you're doing. The chances of 3 different starters not working is not probable..
