so what can i do with this thing? it's a budget smart phone. no i don't understand droidian or applish application language nor do i plan to get a droid or apple phone quite yet. it's a basic nokia e71x straight from ATT replacing my busted phone.

is it worth unlocking this thing? i have a basic data plan through ATT. i heard there is a version of ovi maps that is e71x compatible but to be honest, i only need to see a map once in a while and don't need turn by turn directions. att has navi service covered anyways for a decent fee, so i'm not worried about that. google maps is sufficient for me, and i can generally navigate 3x faster than someone with a crappy gps device with just a quick glance at an actual map.

i guess my question is; besides the basic email, text, web browsing, picture taking, music playing usage, what else is this thing good for? i know att takes out some functions of the original e71, just not sure if it's worth throwing more money into it than the $18 in taxes i paid to get it, if unlocking (if possible) won't be significantly better than what i have now

any good forums or whatever to read up on this that you guys can recommend?

it's my first smart phone, upgrading from an lg vu that's about as useful as a phone as is holding a warm rock up to your head... so any tips would be awesome lol

I had that phone for a while.

I had looked into unlocking it but there really aren't any apps that make it worth it. Or there weren't for me.

I wanted OVI maps but because it won't work without unlocking I just dl'd google maps and I actually ended up liking it enough that I probably wouldn't even need the Nokia stuff.

One feature Nokia makes for that phone is the ability to selectively filter and block numbers. AT&T doesn't want you doing that, so the software cannot be installed on their version. I was kind of bummed at first but then I realized the software was 3rd party, ran and looked like shit and I didn't really need it after all.

Pros:
Decent camera in certain lighting conditions
Expandable media
OK browser for last-gen smartphone
Intuitive controls
slimmest smartphone (at the time)

Cons:
I replaced mine twice so far, my friend has gone through 4x. Not as durable as Nokias of the past
Software has problems with AT&T trying to make the e71x proprietary. They take forever to correct and push updates
design flaw: the charger port on the bottom breaks off from it's contacts internally making charging impossible. Like mine. This is not uncommon.
Mine got uncomfortably warm when under heavy use.

Overall I loved the way it looked and felt, never had issues with making calls, checking email, google maps app works fine on this phone... But it's definitely behind the curve now.

so it's worth about the $18 i paid for it then lol. good thing i didn't opt to buy a used unlocked version for more cash.

but it sounds like it's still better than my lg which eats batteries and sim cards like no other (refurbished btw.... never again). not to mention people can't even connect to my line half the time they call me. says number is not in service lol. makes it easy to ignore people though so it does have it's benefits haha

cool. thanks for the info and i'll def check out that forum

Ive got a Nokia Nuron through T-Mobile... not sure if yours is the same as mine though, but I dont have to have the smart phone package, yet the phone has full smart phone capabilities. I simply pay the 9.99/mo basic data fee, and that is with 100% turn by turn map support. You can download new versions of OviMaps at the OviStore. Its actually pretty nice, I dont use it for the GPS navigation part, but it is my hot button for finding food/service stations when on road trips. I believe that portion of OviMaps is also available separately.
