clutch discs arent supposed to have play in the center splined section... right?
this clutch disc i have has a bit of up/down and side to side play.

It's sprung hub. That's fine. The splines sleve rides in a plate that is held in place by the springs. If it was a solid hub you'd need a new disc.

took it to a clutch shop, it was a bad thing. getting it fixed for $20

Your not supposed to have play. The springs absorb the shock from the clutch disc when it comes in contact with the nflywheel so it takes some of the slack to minimize wear and tear in the whole driveline.
