Our host's web server took a huge shit (failed hdd) and we lost the site for an entire fucking day. Obviously it's back up, but we lost 6 days of posts because their backup was very old. But, they said they were able to restore the databases from the old hard drive, so we might be able to recover those posts. We'll see.

ok, they recovered our latest DB. all the posts from the last 6 days are back.
i am so upset how this whole thing went down that we are officially switching hosts. as a IT pro myself, just reading this: https://secure.cphosting.com/mecca.html infuriated me.
first off, they are not running a server with at least RAID. it's a single hard drive that can fail and lose everything, just like what happened.
second, their backups are very old. 6 days!
third, they are not running virtual IPs! if you lose a server, you can redirect traffic to another server or to at least a web page telling everyone what the hell is going on. not have the default "WELCOME TO YOUR WEB SITE" bullshit confusing everyone! fuck i'm sure half of the world thought we didn't pay our bills or some spammer finally got us.
anyway, this isn't the first time we've had downtime with this host. in the past it didn't matter, we had no traffic. but these days, having 12-20 hour chunks of downtime it unacceptable.
i'll start looking for a new host today.
