I have a customer whose IS300 we turbo'd and is making 400 RWHP, and his stock 5MT W box shit the bed.

What trans would you suggest replacing it with, and what parts are gonna be necessary for the conversion?

He was initially thinking Getrag, but I told him an R154 would be a wiser choice and would cost exponentially less, leaving him with more cash to spend on a diff and suspension.

Whatchy'all think?

R154 with MA70 shifter linkage has been the norm in that chassis.

If he wants something really new and nice, find a JZX110 R154.

word up.
can he reuse his bellhousing or will he need to source a JZ/R154 specific bellhousing?

ma70 is what you use, it does sit a little forward but no more so than it would in a x8

for another is300 turbo, we are using a R154 from jzx100 with the remote linkage, shifter thing whatever you call it.

the other time we used the A70 trans (the blue vvti 1j swapped one), but it puts it really far forward imo. owner didn't like hitting the control buttons when shifting so he put in a 45deg angled extender on the shifter to bring it back a notch. this is with a c's short shifter btw.

r154 for sheezee. hks twin disc done and done. I've done getrag n the IS and it's a bitch. Plus r154 is a beter match to all the gears you can get for the 8" rear end.

ditto. i installed a brand new v161 into another IS300, requires custom tranny member, driveshaft, and a bit of clearancing, but you end up with short gears... even with the spaced out gearing in the v161. if you got a rear end higher than 3.9, forget it. it does get the power down though

haha come to think of it an NA 6 spd getrag would be pretty slick for track use

from that pic brian put up i'd say either jza70 or jzx90 remote linkage would work on the R154. i would prefer the x90 setup if it was me, at least you can run the shifter itself totally straight up and not bent back toward the driver. the x90 remote linkage R154 sits totally straight up in neutral whereas the jza70 shifter is just bent backwards at an angle, so the shift knob itself isn't as much of a difference in distance.

The w58 from the na jza80 is pretty strong... I know that it's strongEr than the ma70 w58. It also sits in the same or similar enough position as the x90 r154 shifter. I just think the r154 shifts like a turd. My friends shifter is like snick snick smooth. The r154 is chunk chink.

I take that back... Finally got the DM nylon pivot bushng and urethane lower ball bushing thingy. Shifts a shit ton better. Now the only slop is in the rubber insulator of the actual shift stick.

a like new R154 is NOT bad at all. but like 90% of the R154's coming out of old A70's, they are beat. the JZX100 tranny we have at the shop felt like shifting through soft butter in comparison. but yea, w58 still is way smoother. wouldn't mind one for a daily making 350hp tops and no track use

i wouldn't mind trying the triple mesh synchros and gear ratios from a solstice tranny but use the steel plate, but i don't really care THAT much about shifter feel.

its not about feel as much as it is speed, i can shift way faster with a W. no matter what you do to a R, it shifts slow.

So if I go with an R from an A70, an exedy hyper single or twinplate for a jza70, and get the JZ bellhousing from DM, can I reuse the IS's driveshaft and clutch hydraulics? Anything else I should get for the swap?
