I'm getting towards the end of my MX73 1JZ swap and I'm looking at what I'm going to use for my speedo signal. The stock X73 speedo cable looks like it's going to be a bit too short to reach the port on the passenger's side of the tranny (R154) but looking at the wiring schematic it looks like I might be able to just run the signal from the 1J speed sensor straight to the digidash, or use the speed signal that feeds the digidash to feed the ECU's need for a speed sensor signal.

to get to the point

1- will the JZZ30 1JZ ecu function properly without the speed sensor hooked up or will it go into some kinda weak ass limp mode?

2- has anyone either used the signal from the electronic speedo sensor on the tranny to run the digidash, or used the signal from the digidash to supply the ECU with a speed signal

3- what make/model of speedo cable would be long enough if I need to use the stock cable?

You should be good on the length for the speedo cable in an X7. If not maybe use a stock X8 speedo cable.

i'm curious on this one too. i am not running a speedo and i keep getting a CEL. speed sensor (42). that was my first thought to run the speed sensor setup directly to the ecu.

I'm leaning towards trying to use the signal from the JZZ30 harness to run the digidash and ditch the speedo cable if possible. I'll get back to you if I'm going to need that cable Bill, and thanks again. What would all of us Ottawa guys do without you.

Also, for the record, the MX73 auto speedo cable definitely won't work with an R154. The speedo drive gear and the body of the sensor/cable adapter are off by at least 1/2" in diameter.

Jimmy kinda late but during one of the numerious times i pulled the moter+trans in and out i tried to fit my 5m auto speedo cable on the r154 and it spun on just fine.

the overall cable is less than a foot too short.
Maybe if i would have kept that little elbo thing the auto trans had on it i would have been fine >.<

Also, I've run my friends x90 box and my chipped z30 box without the speed sensor hooked up and no probs here.

I have the stock 5m speedo cable with the elbow, and a JZA70/ 7MGTE R154 speedo cable pickup on my car, works great. The only issue is the cable is JUST long enough, not much slack. No speed cut (I've done over 180kph no problem), no BS. I'm not 100% sure if my speed variable power steering is actually working, but it is hooked up, and the speed signal comes from the cluster, so it should theoretically be working.
